Former USA Eagles backrow Louis Stanfill has gone viral for his incredible plea to the American public to get behind the sport of rugby.
Speaking following his countries match with Scotland in Washington DC, Stanfill spoke to US Broadcasters FloRugby.
Despite suffering a set of back-to-back defeats to Romania and Scotland, the US fans got behind their team, something Stanfill was keen to highlight.
“You know the boys put on a good show and like I said, DC showed up and showed out.
“Rugby is strong here and that’s what we need across the country,” the California native said.
Focusing on the Major League Rugby (MLR) competition, Stanfill emplored American Rugby fans to get behind their local team.
“So if you have an MLR team in your neighbourhood, then get out, be a part of it and get your kids involved. This is the greatest sport on earth and we need more people to be playing.”
Turning to his son who was waving a USA flag, Stanfill said, “Do you play rugby?” To which his son promptly replied, “Yup!”
“You sure do,” said Stanfill, “Your six-years-old and you play U8 and we make sure that any kid is around us we recruit them to go and put on a jersey because it is the greatest sport on earth.”
Having been granted the hosting rights for the Men’s Rugby World Cup in 2031 and the Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2033, the US will be at the forefront of the rugby world’s consciousness. Given the infrastructure, sporting mad public and resources in the USA, it has the potential to be a truly unique spectacle.
